It was during this period, in 1985, that I learned so much about digital signal processing, and was introduced to Fourier transforms. I had an application for pitch following built to determine exactly the pitch that I was whistling or singing. It was called "Do Re Mi". I also wrote another app that allowed me to extract a pitch/amplitude envelope from a sound (like me whistling or singing) and then I could apply any other waveform to it directly. This is called cross-synthesis. But now I know that there are many other nuances that are required to do that properly, like phase, waveform shape.

My MIDI program is not available for download I am sorry to say. It's still under development.

Keep on making music with computers, Ali!

--Mark
Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05314130812566991108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8334018989882702842.post-50009713495105901152013-03-24T02:45:44.946-07:002013-03-24T02:45:44.946-07:00Hi there,

A friend of mine had bought one of the sound digitizers and I borrowed it from him. It was an amazing first experience with recording and playing back digitized sound. I used it to create new startup sounds and add real music to VideoWorks animations. For some reason I always loved listening to musical phrases at different pitches and the scroll bar made that easy, along with the sample rate multiplier.

In emulation on mini vmac I was able to open those old samples and enjoy the past. I opened up SoundCap and saw your name along with Tom Hedges. Amazed to learn you have done so much; it seems like many of the innovators from then were very talented in multiple fields.

I'm still making music with computers of course and that early first experience is still one of the best. Thanks for your awesome work!

Best regards and keep it up!

Sincerely,

Ali S, Marlyand

PS Is your Midi 2008 software available for download? It seems great for learning progressions.Alinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8334018989882702842.post-60485590980240348802012-02-07T12:24:45.745-08:002012-02-07T12:24:45.745-08:00oops - sorry. No, my origins are in convert with Tom Hedges at Calma, where we helped invent the first real CAD system for developing VLSI chips. We even got an award for inventing GDS II stream format. This format was used for 24 years as a standard for interchanging geometry data for fabrication, and it supposedly led to the "fabless design" house, the modern way chips are designed separate from their fabrication facilities. My award from the Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturing Industry (SEMI) was unexpected but still became one of my most cherished.

The music I write is on soundcloud, meanwhile.Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05314130812566991108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8334018989882702842.post-58746993601142796072012-02-07T05:11:42.837-08:002012-02-07T05:11:42.837-08:00Zug Izland - Sunny Day (saw them live in Corpus Ch...Zug Izland - Sunny Day (saw them live in Corpus Christi, TX @ 2002, very creepy lead singer, cool)
Billy Idol - For What It's Worth (live 2001, Springfield cover)
Muse - Uprising
Jeff Beck f. Your comment that there was no "standard common music notation format", causes me to remember to ask you a question that I have been wanting to ask for 17 years. In the late 1980s, I had written a profitable wysiwyg word processor (Word Up) for the Atari ST GEM operating system. When I was working at Fractal, I was sometimes fixing bugs with Lee Lorenzen on the Altura Mac -> PC porting layer code. It seems that some where I saw that you had been one of the original creators of the GEM operating system (a competitor to Windows). Is that true? Was Lee also involved, given that Ventura Publisher originally ran on GEM correct?

I don't know if I ever told anyone at Fractal Design that I was born and grew up until age 15 in New Orleans. I was exposed to jazz culture. Ellis Marsalis lived down the street from my stepfather. I used to dance alongside in Zulu parades with the flambos (back in the day, before it was watered down for the tourists, when my father and I used to catch crawfish in the swamps). I really enjoyed the school bands in the Mardi Gras parades (the beats, dancing, and personalities). I lived in poverty for a while after age 5 and attended an elementary school where my sister and I were the only Caucasians. The other students would touch our hair, because they had never felt blonde hair. I remember that school, because that was when I decided to stop wearing underwear. I briefly learned violin. I was messing around a bit with a saxophone in college. Life got more chaotic (varied and time constrained) and I lost interest or time to practice.

My primary interest in music has remained that I am often a very emotional or passionate person, and it is outlet for expression of these intangibles. I am familiar with the genres you have mentioned in your blogs. I was into all of them at one time or another (Pink Floyd, Genesis, The Beatles, Cold Play, etc). Perhaps my desire to live in Philippines is influenced by some similarities to the deep south, and a life of struggle (more feeling). For example, in my adolescence I used to challenge myself to see how many minutes I could submerge myself in nearly scalding tub of water, while holding my breath. My father went to live in the jungle in Belize (briefly) when I was 5, and I had dreams of him in the jungle, with Santana's Black Magic Woman. Perhaps I needed to go find the black magic women, lol. I owe my awesome life to my father. Now I live in a $100/mo shack along the beach. Today I ate banana (fat one that you don't have in USA) and fried vegetables, with locally grown brown organic rice.

Hope it is not too overbearing if I share many links to songs that hopefully you haven't heard already. Maybe there is at least one that is interesting to you.

(need to split into 2 comments)shelbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04192118408905938326noreply@blogger.com
